Grapevine by Rosalyn Queen
June 6, marked the 80th anniversary of the thousands of Americans who became a part of the Second World war as they entered France. The ships pulled up to the beach and thousands of soldiers exited the ships heading toward the beach. Approximately 2,000 were killed in the water before reaching the beach. Those who made it scaled Pointe du Hoc and entered into France and became a part of the war. It was reported that approximately 45 sets of brothers were killed that day. Today there are approximately 150 survivors of that war. As many as were able gathered there this week to observe this event. Those there ranged in the age of 96 to 104.
When the survivors were asked how they felt that day. They echoed they were not afraid. Others stated that it was “the power of my mothers prayers that saved me that day.” The backdrop of the graveyard where thousands of Americans are buried provided a solemn picture for this event. After many remarks and a flyover by airplanes, there was a 21 gun salute. Many times I have wondered why it was a 21 gun salute and one of the newscasters settled this question for me. 21 is the numbers 1 7 7 6 added together. Just a bit of trivia but something worth knowing.
I watched the entire ceremony and what a wonderful tribute to our armed services.
During the month of June there are many days that we will be observing Americans’ Holidays. West Virginia’s birthday, and Juneteenth, National Independence Day are just two. I urge you to observe these days and take a moment to thank those who are serving in our military . Many families have sacrificed much for our freedom. First my father, Bill Burnett served in the Marines in 1923. My mother’s three brothers the Venezianos, served our country. My brothers in law, Virgil and Dan defended us as well as Fray Queen, who served in Germany and my son in law, Dixon Pruitt retired from the service. Also a member of the Army was my cousin, Dr. Franklin Oliverio. I am proud of these men and I say thank you.
Spring has faded into summer and this means hazy warm days on the patio with a cold drink enjoying our potted flowers and visiting with our neighbors. Take care, enjoy your vacations, stay safe and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
