Golf professional fancies FootGolf at Pipestem Resort State Park

PGA Golf Professional Bob Biroscak at Pipestem Resort State Park has not turned in his drivers, irons and putters, and he doesn’t intend to do so. However, he recognizes the need to create new interest in the game of golf.
“We need to try new ideas and, if it takes a soccer ball and me wearing knickers to get players at the Par 3 golf course in the afternoons, I’m in,” Biroscak said.
Biroscak and Pipestem Recreational Activities Coordinator Kim Hawkins are pleased with the inclusion of FootGolf as another outdoor recreation pursuit at this southern West Virginia state park.
FootGolf is played on Pipestem’s Short Course, known as the Par 3. It combines soccer and golf. The rules are basically the rules of golf except that players use their feet instead of clubs. Tees are marked with orange tee boxes and the cup is 21 inches in diameter. The game became available Sept. 11 when the Concord University men’s and women’s soccer teams tested the course and playability. The course is now available to Pipestem’s guests and visitors.
There is a minimal fee to play. Players may use a personal No 5 soccer ball or rent equipment at the Short Course. FootGolf is open beginning at 2 p.m. every day except Saturdays, when start times are at 4 p.m.
“It’s good exercise and more importantly, it introduces the new generation to the game of golf that otherwise may never have considered the game,” said Biroscak.
Pipestem Resort State Park is located between Athens and Hinton in Summers County. The park is open year-round and weather permitting, so is FootGolf. Visit www.pipestemresort.com for more information.
