Lincoln Head Coach Rob Hawkins has his football team clicking on all cylinders. This past Friday the Cougars turned in their most impressive effort of the season, shutting out East Fairmont 48-0.
The offense has been putting up big numbers all season behind signal caller, Kobie Carpenter and that trend continued against the Bees. Carpenter was 17 of 27 for 281 yards and two touchdowns. Chase Riley caught seven passes for 122 yards. Dustin Marks hauled in five balls for 120 yards including a 69 yard touchdown. Kyle Owens started the scoring in the second quarter on a 12 yard touchdown reception. It was the first of three scores that gave Lincoln the 21-0 halftime lead.
The Cougars would duplicate that scoring effort following the halftime break and would take 42-0 lead to the final quarter. The defense would also put a pair of scores on the board, compliments of Carpenter and Marks. Carpenter picked off a pass and went 95 yards for a touchdown. Marks scooped up an East Fairmont fumble and returned it 40 yards to pay dirt.
Special teams play was impressive as well, led by kicker Brendin Hawkins. Hawkins hit on all six of his point after attempts in the affair.
There is little time to celebrate as three time defending Class AA State Champ Bridgeport comes to Shinnston this Friday. The week after, the Cougars will travel to Lewis County. The Indians and Minutemen posses a tough task for Hawkins and his squad, but if they can manage a win or two, they would vault themselves well up the ladder in the rankings.
The Indians remained undefeated after defeating Robert C. Byrd 41-7 last Friday at Wayne Jamison Field. A 20-0 second quarter propelled the Tribe to the win.
Quarterback, Gordon Swiger did damage with his arm and his legs. Swiger had 74 yards on the ground and a pair of rushing scores. He also tossed two scoring strikes. The first was a 31 yarder to J.J. Harris to kick off the scoring. The latter was an 11 yard toss to Seth Friel.
This week’s matchup will highlight the North Central WV schedule and is a must see for Cougar fans.
Liberty upended Philip Barbour 32-13. The Colts took the lead in the second quarter. However, it was short lived as the Mountaineers would tre it up before halftime on a 4 yard touchdown run by Dalton Westfall. Westfall scored three consecutive touchdowns and tacked on a fourth to put the game away. Westfall finished with 236 yards on 21 attempts. The Mounties travel to Robert C. Byrd for a pivotal Big 10 lock-up.
West Virginia University enjoyed a weekend off in preparation for their game with BYU at Fed Ex Field this Saturday. The time off was crucial for senior signal caller, Skylar Howard, who has been nursing some sore ribs. This will be the first road contest of the year away from “Touchdown City” and provides an excellent opportunity to impress the country. It would also move their record to 3-0.
Congratulations to WVU’s Women’s Soccer team for being ranked #1 in the country. It’s the first time in program history that they have held the top ranking.
