Find Room in Your Heart and Time in Your Schedule for Dads on Fathers Day

As we welcome in the month of June, a look at the calendar advises us that there are several observances for us. First, we would observe Juneteenth which is the day we observe the ending of slavery in the United States. It is a National holiday and is observed on June 19th.

Next, on June 20, we observe West Virginia Day, This is the day that West Virginia became a state.

One of the biggest holidays is our observance of Father’s Day. Father’s Day sometimes takes a back seat to Mother’s Day and this should not be. Most of us have had a Fathers presence in our lives and can look back at all they taught us.

Back when I was growing up a Fathers status was different than it is today. There was never a thing as the mother going to work and the father staying home to take care of the children. Granted the father will be observed as the mother dictates, especially for young children. No matter the situation a father should be recognized on his day.

Many of life’s lessons was taught to us by our fathers. Usually he taught us to drive, he taught us to swim, there were not places that offered lessons. We went to a river or lake to be held in our fathers arms to learn to swim. Our fathers taught us how to pump gas for our cars and how to do those little jobs to repair scratches etc to the car. For girls I bet it was their father that taught them their first dance.

Today that father figure does not necessarily need to be the birth father but the presence of the man in your family.

My personal opinion is that it is necessary to have a father figure in every family. I know that many of you will take me to task on this statement but please respect my age.

Now for the celebration. I know that many of us will say that every day is Father’s Day, but deep down everyone appreciates a celebration just for them. Let your father know that you appreciate his presence in your life.

A happy Father’s Day to all you fathers out there and a happy birthday to my great granddaughter, Avery. Good luck to all you graduates as you approach the next step in your life.

Enjoy summer, stay safe and until next week ” Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
