Joyce Ann Freeland Sawyer, 85, of Shinnston passed away Friday, July 18, 2025 at Fazio’s Elder Care, Monongah after an extended stay.  She was born June 2, 1940 at Metz, Marion Co., a daughter of the late Harry B. and Mabel Ann Yost Freeland.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Sawyer who died October 5, 2019.

She is survived by her daughters, Debbie Malone, Shinnston, Tammi Hanna and husband Aaron, Enterprise, and Lisa Bauer and husband, Thomas, Wisconsinz; her grandchildren, Danielle Rinker and husband Jon, Shinnston, Mandy Morgan and husband Jason, Fairmont, Isaiah Hanna and wife Caitlin, Fairmont, Tommy Bauer and wife Nicole, England, and Nash Bauer and wife Tracie, Delaware; 5 great-grandchildren.

Also preceding her in death were her son-in-law, Dannie Malone, sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Richard Wade, Brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Clara Mae Freeland, Mother-in-law, Janette Morris Anderson, Father-in-law, William F. Sawyer, Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and JoAnn Sawyer; Brother-in-law, William Sawyer, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Jack Shenal.

Joyce was a member of Coon’s Run Baptist Church, Adamsville.  She was a longtime volunteer of the Lord’s Pantry.  She loved spending time with family and enjoyed camping.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to WVU Medicine Hospice, 12 Rousch Drive, Westover, WV  26501.

Friends will be received at Harmer Funeral Home, 300 Pike St., Shinnston from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday.  A funeral service will be Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at 9:30 AM with Pastor Darren Alkire officiating.  Interment will be at WV National Cemetery, Pruntytown.
