The Catholic church celebrates the Catholic Jubilee, also known as Holy Year” every 25 years. This tradition has its roots in the Old Testament. The Jubilee is to be a time of rest, forgiveness, spiritual renewal, and restoration. Originally, it was a 100 year celebration but in 1470 Pope Paul II reduced it to 25 years.
The theme for this year is Pilgrims of Hope. Focus will be on recovery, renewal, hope and coming home. Rome is the center of the Jubilee celebration. It runs from December 24, 2024 through January 6,2026. There is an anticipated ritual of the opening of the doors of the four major basilicas in Rome. The most popular is the St. Peter’s Basilica. The doors are always sealed shut except for the Jubilee years. The opening of the Holy Doors marks the beginning of the Jubilee. The opening invites the faithful to enter and receive the graces associated with the Holy Year.
