Rick Hursey, 82, of Shinnston, West Virginia, passed away suddenly at home on August 19, 2025.

Rick was born on July 23, 1943, to the late Mary Lee (Hurst) Hursey and Walter Andrew Hursey. At age 6, Rick started his first job as a paperboy for the Shinnston News. He used his earnings to buy Bond #1 to build the Shinnston Pool, which he ran for years as an adult. By age 12, Rick ran his own bicycle sales & repair shop. He worked for Westinghouse from 1961 to 1970. In 1970, he opened Rick’s Welding, which he converted into Universal Fabricators Inc. in 1972. The business evolved into Universal Enterprises Inc., which is still located in Shinnston, West Virginia. Rick served in the US Army Reserve from 1962 to 1968. He was a proud member of the Shinnston Parks &  Planning committee. He also served on the Harrison County Planning Commission for many years. Rick was a member of the American Legion Post 31 and the Moose Lodge 929. He was an officer of the Drifter Car Club of Shinnston. Rick also served as a member and president of the North Central West Virginia American Society of Highway Engineers.

Rick loved classic cars and NHRA racing. He was a true adventurer, traveling across the US, Canada, and abroad. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Rick was light on his feet and could always be found on the dance floor, cutting a rug to the oldies. Rick relished the many trips to Disney and the beaches of Florida with the disabled children of Harrison County. He treasured spending every summer in Myrtle Beach with his family. He delighted in spending time with his grandchildren, Ashton, Aubrey, & Sasha.  Rick adored game nights with Sasha and reading stories until they both fell asleep.

Rick is survived by his beloved sister Shara Hursey, son Richard Andrew (Andy) Hursey and his wife Glenna Jo Hursey, grandsons Ashton and Aubrey Hursey, life partner Linda Colliere, Daughter Marian Cummings, son William (Bill) Cummings, and granddaughter Sasha Cummings.

Friends will be received at Harmer Funeral Home on Sunday, August 24, 2025 from 2:00PM-8:00PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, August 25, 2025 at 11:00AM with Pastor Kevin Nuzum officiating.
