A Present for Bobcat Fans

Christmas came early for West Virginia Wesleyan College football fans. The Bobcats were able to land a top notch coach to guide the program into 2026. Shinnston native and current resident Mike Kellar was named the Head Coach late last month, sparking optimism for a resurgence back to the top of the Mountain East Conference.

Kellar has spent the last seven seasons as the Head Coach at Glenville State where he guided the Pioneers to a winning record in five of those campaigns. Glenville State had four consecutive winning seasons, including a six and five mark in 2025 and two seasons ago the Pioneers had one of the longest winning streaks in the conference down the final stretch of the season.

It was at Glenville State where Kellar started his collegiate journey as a player before moving on to Fairmont State. He would make Fairmont his first coaching stop after eight seasons as the Falcons offensive coordinator, Kellar would venture out of the Mountain State.

Two years as the offensive coordinator at Northern Michigan led to a move closer to home. California (PA) flourished with Kellar as the offensive coordinator where he spent 2004 to 2008. Kellar had paid his coaching dues and it was time for a promotion – and a move back to West Virginia.

Even though Concord University is just 21 miles from the state line, it was home in a sense and more importantly it provided Kellar with the opportunity to prove his abilities as a head coach. . In 2009, he led the Mountain Lions to a six and five record and in 2010 an impressive eight and three mark would follow.

California (PA) realized what they had in Kellar and they brought him back as their head coach in 2012. He would lead the Vulcans to an eight and three record, the first of three eight win campaigns in four years. His record after six years as head coach was 45 and 20 at two different schools.

Kellar would move to Lenoir-Rhyne, located in Hickory North Carolina where he would run their program from 2016 to 2017 before making the move back home to Shinnston.

He has not only been an exceptional evaluator of talent, he also has a knack for surrounding himself with excellent assistant coaches. Many of those coaches are from Harrison County as well and share the same love for the game that Kellar has.

West Virginia Wesleyan couldn’t have been more fortunate to have brought in a leader of Kellar’s magnitude. Bobcat fans know that Kellar has the Midas touch and they are looking forward to seeing the program move in an upward direction.

I am excited to watch Kellar in action firsthand. I’ve been blessed to call West Virginia Wesleyan games on the internet for the last three seasons and I have a feeling the fourth is going to lead to something special. The numbers don’t lie and with Kellar just 13 wins from 100 career victories, I’m hoping to have the opportunity to call history!

Merry Christmas Bobcat fans!

That will do it for now! Until next week . . . take care and God Bless!!!
