Cecil C. Spencer, 81, of Shinnston passed away surrounded by his family on Friday evening, December 5, 2025 at his residence.

He was born July 25, 1944 at Frankfort, Greenbrier County, WV, a son of the late Woodrow and Dorathy Morris Spencer.

He is survived by his companion, Karen Sears, Shinnston; three sons, Eugene W. Spencer and his wife April, Cleveland, WV, Andrew C. Spencer, and his wife Gina, Whitehall, and Bradley W. Spencer and his wife Terry, Adams Center, NY; eight grandchildren, Brittany Gentine, Jake Spencer, Justin Spencer, Taylor Crumbliss, Randy Stickley, Staley Spencer, Phoebe Spencer, and Shea Spencer; and siblings Annette Saville, Yvette Carr, Lou Knabenshue, Rick Spencer, Paul Spencer.

He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Nelson Spencer, Helena Sue Spencer, and Sybal Jo Anderson.

Cecil grew up at Century, Barbour County as 1 of 9 children. He graduated with the last class to graduate from Phillippi High School in 1963, then enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1963, where he took basic training at Fort Knox, Ky, then advanced training as a Dental Technician and a Combat Medic. He spent 10 days on a troop transport crossing the North Atlantic in December, and arrived in Berlin Germany on December 23, 1963. The Berlin Wall was built in 1961, so he went through Check Point Charley several times and saw the devastation that still remained from WW II in the Russian controlled sector of Berlin. He served 2 years assigned to the US Army Hospital, Berlin as a Dental Technician. In December 1965 he was assigned to Fort Mead MD with duty station at Vint Hill Farm, VA, then discharged from the Army in July 1966 with a rank of Spec 5.

After coming home, he went to work for King Knob Coal, then he worked for Monongahela Power in October, 1968 and retired from Allegheny Power on October, 2001.

He became active with the American Legion and held various offices of Shinnston American Legion Post 31.

Friends will be received at Harmer Funeral Home, 300 Pike St., Shinnston from 5:00 to 8:00 Monday. A funeral service will be at the Funeral Home at 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 9, 2025 with Pastor Mathew Keith officiating. After the funeral service, a dinner will be prepared by the ladies of American Legion Post 31. The Harrison County Honor Guard will conduct Military Honors after the service.
