For almost nine decades, the State of West Virginia has used roadside markers to help illustrate state history. The Stonewood CEOS discussed their value and purpose last month.

By Estella Farnsworth

The Stonewood CEOS club gathered at the Grille Club Cafe in Clarksburg for a Valentine luncheon.
The food and service was great. I think we have found another go-to restaurant. A short meeting was conducted following lunch. Minutes of the last meeting were read by secretary Estella Farnsworth and accepted; Treasurer Pam Cowdrey gave her report which was accepted and filed.

The monthly lesson was taught by Estella Farnsworth entitled Marking West Virginia’s History. It told the story of how we came to have historical signs and markers.

The first markers were placed in WV in 1937 when the WV Commission on Historic and Scenic Highway markers were created and identified 440 sites. Historical database of WV signs can be found at HMdb.org . It would be well worth checking out. Our club has been challenged to make note of any interesting signs that we see in our travels this summer.

Members were reminded to submit any book titles that they have read and would recommend to the Purposeful reading committee. Also on the subject of reading, several members have volunteered to participate in Read across America Week ; 3/2 through 3/6, by reading to students at the Clarksburg Classical Academy. Pam gave a book report on The Lighthouse Keeper; a faith based book by James Michael Pratt. It is a good story. Health Motivator Terri Jo Boyers talked about walking as a means of exercise and also chair exercise which is becoming popular for seniors in particular.

Reminders; Show and share will be done at the County Council meeting March 9 at Clarksburg recreation center; and also the Area meeting will be on May 2 at Life Methodist Church in Fairmont.

Pam brought a necklace with a tiny metal Coke bottle pendant made between WW1 and WW2, she also brought her great grandfather’s 24K wedding band. Both were beautiful pieces.

We collected 106 packages of Ramen Noodles for donation to the Mustard Seed, thank you to all of our members; the Mustard Seed is always very appreciative of our donations. Next month’s donation will be jelly.

Meeting was adjourned. Next meeting will be March 16. Stay optimistic everyone; spring is just around the corner.
