It’s that time once again to acknowledge the efforts of Harrison County’s student-athletes. Each week we review the performances of the athletes from the six schools (Bridgeport, Liberty, Lincoln, Notre Dame, Robert C. Byrd, and South Harrison) in our county.

The Shinnston News & Harrison County Journal’s Athlete of the Week award is an avenue to promote the youth of our county while bringing attention to their athletic accomplishments.

The Harrison County athletes in the spotlight this week are Robert C. Byrd’s Chloe Barlow and Xavier Carvelli.

Flying Eagle softball standout Chloe Barlow has had a couple of big games recently. A few weeks ago in a win over East Fairmont, she struck out 17 batters. Barlow also hit a triple and drove in three runs in the victory.

This week, Barlow picked up a win in the circle over Grafton. In that game, she also fanned 14 Bearcats while helping her own cause at the plate. She was three for four with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Flying Eagle Xavier Carvelli recently helped his squad to a huge win on the diamond over Bridgeport. Carvelli got the win on the mound, allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out nine. It was the first win for RCB over Bridgeport since 2021.

Congratulations to RCB’s Chloe Barlow and Xavier Carvelli for shining bright in the SN and HCJ spotlight!
