The two biggest superstars in the world of golf for the last three decades have been Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. During that span, Woods had won 82 PGA tournaments while Nickelson has recorded 45 PGA wins with six major championships.
Unfortunately for the tour, both players had had their images tarnished recently and the search is on for a few good men to step up and fill the void that the PGA desperately wants filled.
Brooks Koepka could be a contender to step up into one of those slots. Area fans have a connection to him through his father Bob, a Bridgeport High School and West Virginia Wesleyan alum. Brooks has had five major wins in his back pocket, but he hasn’t had one since 2023. A handful of nagging injuries have kept him from playing his best golf, but he has been looking more like his old self in the past few months.
Another possibility is Wyndham Clark. Clark just won the US Open at Shinecock Hills. It was his second major. The first came in 2023 and he is starting to gain a great deal of fan popularity with his latest victory.
In 2023, Clark started working with a sports psychologist and he has benefited from meditation, praying, and journaling. He has a “good guy” image that could really benefit the Tour.
Everyone loves a good comeback story and it would be great to se Tiger and Phil recover from their most recent series issues. But if they can’t, Brooks and Wyndham wouldn’t be bad choices to be elevated into those vacant spots.
