Extreme heat and humidity did not inhibit the magnificent July 1st celebration the City of Shinnston hosted to commemorate America’s 250th year of independence! A record crowd estimated at more than 1,200 people were seated on Ferguson Memorial Park’s lawn, and that didn’t include those who settled on the hillside or neighboring yards and patios. As always, the massive gathering included not only residents of the community but many from outlying areas as well.

The pool remained open until 6 p.m. before attention turned to the evening’s entertainment which included Cartoon Headquarters’ bounce houses, slides, rock climbing, and even a few carnival rides for the younger children. Eight food trucks were also on site offering food and drinks, and several school groups, scouts, and vendors were also busy with extras.

Warmup music was provided by Austin Glaspell of Lost Creek, who played acoustic guitar and sang old and newer rock music from 7 to 9 p.m. when the talented Shinnston Community Band took over with a variety of music. As the sky darkened, unmatchable fireworks began to complete this grand evening.

The shuttle transport to the park was a new idea that was utilized this year by more than 400 attendees so it was a successful endeavor. Expecting a large crowd, the City also prepared for that with additional police officers and volunteer police who were beyond efficient in smoothly regulating exit traffic. The entire evening can be deemed a sensational success thanks to the hard work and planning of City officials.
