This week’s edition of “Tee It Up” took us just outside Grafton to the Tygart Lake Public Golf Course. This 18-hole par 72 gem opened in 1967 and has been a fan favorite ever since. Playing a shade over 6,200 yards from the tips and with multiple tee options, there is a fun and challenging round for golfers of all skill levels here.
This exceptional course offers a tale of two sides. The front side is wide open. What you see is what you get with a straightforward opportunity to get your round off to a good start. It also possesses my favorite hole, the scenic, yet intimidating, par three on hole number seven. It is only 144 yards from the blues, but it is guarded by water on three sides and bunkers provide added protection to the picturesque hole.
Business picks up on the back nine with water coming into play on the first five holes. Hole 15 is a par three with an elevated green and number 17 has a knee-knocking tee shot that threads the needle to a massive fairway to a par five. The back nine is a true representative of a risk-versus-reward scoring opportunity.
The course is in great shape due to the efforts of an outstanding staff. The weather has been difficult as of late, but this group has put in the hours and effort to keep this tract in fantastic shape. While others in the area have struggled, Tygart Lake has managed to keep ahead by going the extra mile.
The 19th hole is legendary and it is the place you want to be before and after every round. Memberships are available and tailored to meet your needs. Their flexibility and affordability help make Tygart Lake Public Golf Course not only a great place to have a fun day of golf, but also a perfect possibility if looking for a place to call your golf home.
