The West Virginia State Civilian Conservation Corps Museum Association designated March 26-April 1 as the observance of Civilian Conservation Corps Appreciation Week. On March 31, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the CCC Bill into Law at the White House.
This week, the National CCC Legacy and the State of West Virginia are commemorating this historic signing.
The West Virginia Civilian Conservation Corps Museum at Quiet Dell, in Harrison County observed the eighty-fourth anniversary on Sunday, March 26, at the CCC Museum. A patriotic program was held.
Vice President Reggie Rogers of Chub Run, Harrison County, was master of ceremonies. The National Anthem was followed by the Invocation by Patricia Piercy of Kingmont, Marion County, Randolph County Native. Special Guests were: Richard and Diana George of Fairmont, Crystal Wimer; Harrison Historical Society. George spoke of the many CCC Vets buried at the National Cemetery at Pruntytown, Taylor County. Wimer discussed the importance of the CCC Museum at Quiet Dell. “They have preserved American History here in Harrison County.” commented Wimer. The program included a memorial for all Veterans and the CCC Alumni and Family.
Founder of the West Virginia CCC Museum, Dr. Robert E. Anderson of Bridgeport, filled in those attending of the history of the founding of the CCC and the many accomplishments of those honored.
Edwin Winet, 1931 Truck Restoration Chair, spoke of the very fine military supervisors who kept discipline and trained the young men of the CCC.
Joy Winet of Fairmont introduced the showing of the CCC Video, produced by Peter Jasperse of Baltimore Maryland.
R. Donald Comer and his wife Barbara of Clarksburg officially presented a rare large framed photo of CCC Camp Parsons, Tucker County, West Virginia. Don Comer’s father, Raymond, served at Camp Parsons. Rogers accepted the gift on behalf of the museum. Camp Parsons was known nationwide for producing over two billion seedlings planted across West Virginia and the Nation during the Great Depression.
