The diagnosis of cancer can certainly be physically devastating but it also can be emotionally overwhelming.
On Monday, July 10, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., United Hospital Center will present its next Look Good Feel Better series. This nationwide program for women receiving chemotherapy, radiation and other cancer treatment, will address the concerns of the cancer patient and cancer survivor through an informative session.
“It has often been proved that what we think can influence how we feel; therefore, it is important that when we treat the body, we need to rid it of cancer and at the same time help the patient to feel more positive by addressing both their physical and emotional needs,” said Peggy Johnson, clinical navigator for breast and gynecological health at United Hospital Center. “In the two-hour workshop, a caring volunteer beauty professional will teach simple beauty techniques to help women feel better about themselves, just when they need it most.”
The medical community realizes the importance of treating both the body for cancer and the emotional side effects that come with it.
“This sensitivity is typically the result of one’s physical appearance, so it is important to assist the cancer patient with their outside appearance to improve their emotional security,” Johnson said.
The goal of Look Good Feel Better is to teach those who are currently going through cancer treatment and those who have survived to remember that life must go on even when stress levels are high. That is why UHC wants to address both the physiological and social impacts of cancer through events like Look Good Feel Better.
