“Little boy in a baseball hat/ Stands in the fields with his glove and bat/ Says ‘I am the greatest player of them all’/ Puts his bat on his shoulder and tosses up a ball.’”
The boy in this underappreciated Kenny Rogers classic is the genesis of every Little League player, a little kid with big dreams. Those dreams might be of Major League glory, or perhaps just joining a team with his best friends to make more magical childhood memories together. In any event, for those young people with any kind of baseball dreams, Shinnston Little League is ready to help make them come true.
Nikki Baker is one of the dedicated volunteers working to help inform parents, potential players, and local supporters and sponsors of Shinnston Little League. She noted that “due to County rules, we cannot send flyers home from school letting kids know about registration.”
She added that “many people don’t think about baseball season until the weather warms up, but by then, we already have our teams drafted and will be starting practices! We don’t want anyone to miss out on a chance to play.”
Special motivation greets experienced players and newcomers alike, as Shinnston’s Major League All-Stars “were state champions and went on to play in the regionals.” Baker added that “we’re so proud of them and ready to build on that momentum toward another incredible season for all of our players.”
Registration for the co-ed squads continue through Feb 22 for T-ball, C-ball (machine pitch), minor league, and major league. Cost of registering one child from a family is $70, but that drops to $20 for each additional child. The registration fee “will cover jerseys, hats and belts. Parents will need to purchase baseball pants and socks, once each coach has determined what color to use with their jerseys.” Players also need rubber, as opposed to metal, cleats, “age/size appropriate bat with USA logo”, glove, and helmet. C-ball helmets will need to have a face mask and minor and major league helmets need either a face mask or jaw guard.
Shinnston Little League has endeavored to help families who might struggle to purchase quality equipment that can rack up the costs. “This year,” said Baker, “we are collecting gently-used gear for players to utilize.” She explained that “kids outgrow things so fast, sometimes it’s not worth it to spend a fortune on things they’ll only use for one season.”
“Community hand-me-downs” can be dropped off at porch locations in Shinnston. Baker urges those interested to message the Little League Facebook page for more information on where.
Additionally, DICK’s Sporting Goods in Bridgeport on March 22 and 23 will offer players, parents, and coaches at 20 percent coupon “which is good for their entire purchase.”
Evaluations of players will take place on Feb 28 at the Buzz Henderson Center. “Assessing the skill level of each player allows our coaches to evenly distribute the talent and experience levels among the teams.”
Baker also wished to encourage community businesses and individuals interested in sponsoring the League to reach out and support the players and teams.
