B R I D G E P O R T , W.Va. – Five WVU Medicine skilled nursing facilities have earned five-star overall quality ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), placing them among the highest-performing facilities in the nation.

The CMS Five-Star Quality Rating System is a widely recognized benchmark that helps consumers, families, and healthcare professionals compare skilled nursing and long-term care facilities. Ratings are based on three key domains:

Health inspections: performance on annual state surveys and complaint investigations

Staffing: nursing hours per resident per day, including registered nurse coverage

Quality measures: clinical outcomes and performance indicators for short- and long-stay residents Across the country, only 290 nursing homes/skilled nursing facilities earned five-star status, according to CMS. A five-star rating indicates that a facility’s performance is “much above average” in comparison with others across the country. A complete state-by-state listing of CMS-rated nursing facilities is available through the agency’s Care Compare website.

The WVU Medicine facilities that achieved five stars in the CMS Quality Rating System as “High Performing” for exceptional care in short-term rehabilitation are:
United Hospital Center’s United Transitional Care Center in Bridgeport;
Fairmont Medical Center’s Skilled Nursing Unit;
Garrett Regional Medical Center’s Subacute Rehabilitation Unit in Oakland, Maryland;
Thomas Hospitals Skilled Nursing Unit in Charleston; and
Weirton Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Center.

“These designations reflect our unwavering commitment to delivering outstanding care across every community we serve,” Albert L. Wright, Jr. president and CEO of the WVU Health System, said. “Each recognition is the direct result of the passion, dedication, and professionalism our teams demonstrate every single day.”

As WVU Medicine continues to invest in staff training, quality programs, and evidence-based clinical practices across its skilled nursing network, these five-star ratings highlight the organization’s ongoing efforts to deliver exceptional care experiences for both short-term rehabilitation patients and long-term residents.
