This week’s edition of Tee It Up took us to “the friendly city” to visit Green Hills Country Club. It is known as Fairmont’s premier golf course and a visit there proved the point.
The layout of this exceptional course is classic and it provides a fair, challenging, and enjoyable round for golfers of all skill levels. The difference maker that sets Green Hills Country Club apart is the commitment to excellence from the individuals that strive to make it the best club it can be.
Joe Haller has been a member since 1994. Haller has been on the board of directors , but stepped down to help the club with a major need. Haller has maintained the facilities, putting in as much time as needed to ensure that everything runs at the highest level possible. According to Haller, there is a large number of members who have been a part of the club for a long period of time.
“There is a longstanding tradition here. It is a second home to a lot of members,” explained Haller. “Green Hills Country Club is almost hypnotizing in a sense because once you visit, you don’t want to leave.” It’s come full circle here. Members’ children grew up here and now they have become members themselves. Members are used to the best here. An impeccable golf course, sparkling pool, oversized dining room, and a full restaurant bar that offers a 19th hole that is second to none.
From tee to green, every component of this course is in perfect condition. The fairways have that lush look and a super soft feel. The rough is punishing and it provides a fair penalty for missing the target off of the tee. The majority of the greens are guarded by some of the best bunkers in the Mountain State. They are strategically placed and full of sand. The greens are rolling perfectly at a time of year other courses are slowing down because of the heat.
This track plays 6,223 yards from the blue tees and offers multiple tees to ensure a pleasurable round. The signature hole is number two, a 220 yard par three from the blues. It is guarded by water with a fountain in the middle.
Green Hills Country Club has something for everyone and if you are looking to play at one of the best venues around, then you had better load up your sticks and head to Fairmont!
