Judith Anne Cunningham Asel, 89, of Cunningham’s Run and Roosevelt Street, Shinnston, passed away on January 7, 2025. She was born on July 1, 1935 at Cunningham’s Run, a daughter to the late Wayne Robinson Cunningham Sr. and Myrtle Elizabeth Tarleton Cunningham.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Henry M. Asel, whom she married on July 31, 1955; brother Wayne Robinson Cunningham Jr. (Jack); grandparents Charles and Myrtle Elizabeth Hinebaugh Tarleton, and Willard and Rosetta Alice Robinson Cunningham; and an infant granddaughter Rosetta Anne Carrico.
She is survived by her children, Anne Elizabeth Asel Carrico and husband James of Clarksburg, and Alesa Merry Asel Carrico and husband Randall of Buckhannon; grandchildren Aaron James and Jennifer Elizabeth Anne Carrico of Clarksburg, Julie Lynne Carrico Barberio (Christopher), Hannah Rae Carrico, and Andrew Joseph Carrico of Shinnston; great-granddaughter Olive Juliet Barberio; sister Jill Elizabeth Cunningham Heldreth of Clarksburg, nieces Alice Cunningham Bowman of Shinnston, and Ronda Ruth Kroeger of OH; and nephews David Wayne Cunningham of Cunningham’s Run, and Scott Heldreth of Clarksburg.
Judy was a thirty-year Federal employee, having worked for the FBI in Washington, DC, the U.S. Department of Commerce and Social Security offices in Clarksburg until she retired in 1987. She was a member of the Peora United Methodist Church, having served as former treasurer, a member of the Peora Charge United Methodist Women, and attended the Charles Street Christian Church in Shinnston.
She was President of the Peora Farm Woman’s Club, past president of the Harrison County Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS), member and past president of GFWC WV Woman’s Club of Shinnston, served as GFWC WV North Central District International Chairman and Home Life Chairman. Judy was a lifelong member of the Bice-Ferguson Memorial Museum, Charter member of the Shinnston High School Alumni Association having served as the original treasurer. She received the Commercial Award when graduating with the SHS Class of 1953, and then went on and attended WV Business College. She had a membership of the Shinnston-Lincoln Scholarship Foundation.
Judy was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, NARFE Chapter 1579, Clarksburg, former member of Democrat Women, Clarksburg, member and former chaplain of Ladies Auxiliary of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 2353, Clarksburg, Women of the Moose Chapter, 409, Clarksburg, Clarksburg Lucinda Rose Ladies Auxiliary VFW 573, Board of Trustees of Shinnston Historical Association, The Scottish Heritage Society of North Central WV, Shinnston Senior Satellite, Harrison County Senior Citizens, and Shinnston Garden Club.
Friends will be received at Harmer Funeral Home on Friday, January 10, 2025 from 11:00AM-2:00PM. A funeral service will be held at 2:00PM with Rev. Thomas Bell officiating. Interment will follow at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.
