The Palette, an art gallery and creative space located across from Casey’s and upstairs from Abundant Mother Apothecary, at 225 Pike St, in Shinnston is currently exhibiting “The Maine Event” featuring watercolor paintings by Carolyn Light and Katherine Crim, and photographs by James Crim.
“Stonington is a fishing town on the tip of Deer Isle, Maine which is close to Isle au Haut, Acadia National Park and Monhegan Island. While Katy and Carolyn participated in Frederick Graff’s Stonington watercolor workshop, Jim photographed the iconic landscape surrounding Deer Isle. Fred is a distinguished master painter and teacher as well as a signature member in many watercolor societies, including NWS, AWS, TWS, and the Whiskey Painters of America. Fred’s innovative style of painting emphasizes the development of black and white notans and monochromatic preliminary studies prior to painting. During this process, the artist moves away from recording facts, to linking shapes of dark and light which move the viewers’ eye through the painting. Defining contours with positive and negative shapes, we strive to capture the essence of objects and a sense of place. It is our intent to use this process to strengthen design and use brushstrokes that have a more deliberate, expressive quality.”
