Patrick Lee Matheny, 78, of Pine Bluff, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at his home with his family by his side. He was born November 7, 1946 in Clarksburg, a son of the late John Julian and Helen Mae Martin Matheny.

In 2019, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Karen Sue “Susie” Godfrey Matheny. He and Susie raised a wonderful family that includes their son, Patrick Lee Matheny II and his wife Patty of Wyatt; daughter, Kimberly Mae Matheny and her companion Butch Drain of Fredericksburg, VA; grandchildren, Phillip Creamer of Fredericksburg, VA and his companion Gretchen Boyce of Fairmont; Shane Matheny and his wife Lindsay of Wyatt; and Santana Creamer Hardy and her husband Andrew of Pine Bluff; his great-grandchildren, Aubrey Matheny; Teagan and Jackson Hardy; as well as his sister-in-law, Diane Matheny of Pine Bluff.

In addition to his parents and wife, Pat was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Lee Matheny; his brothers, John Julian Matheny Jr. and his wife Patty; and Jackie Paul Matheny.

Pat was a graduate of Shinnston High School in the Class of 1964. At 17 years of age, Pat signed up for the Army. He went on to honorably serve our country in the 118th Aviation Company’s “Blue Thunderbirds” as a crew chief and door gunner on the UH1 helicopter. As a crew-chief, Pat got to name his Huey. And only one name would do for this job, “Susie Q”, in honor of the love of his life. Pat often reflected on his time in the military and would say it was the most rewarding thing he has ever done.

With many years as a coal miner, Pat retired from CONSOL’s Loveridge Mines. After the death of his parents, Pat followed in their footsteps as the author of the Pine Bluff News for many years. He was an avid sports fan who especially enjoying watching the WVU Mountaineers. Pat would also be found every evening in front of the television for Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

Friends will be received at Perine Funeral Home, 1348 S. Pike St. Shinnston on Sunday from 2-8pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 28th, at 11:00am with Rev. Bruce Hoffman officiating. Interment will follow at the Pine Bluff Cemetery. Online memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.perinefunerals.com
