The Shinnston Garden Club met at the Bice-Ferguson Memorial Museum on Thursday, July 28th with Vice-President Wanda Ashcraft presiding. Ashcraft gave devotions, “Because You Prayed” and then led the group in prayer. The pledge to the United States flag was said in unison. Secretary Letha Stutler gave the minutes of the last meeting. Treasurer Debra Herndon gave current balances and reported on investment activity. Those ill or in distress were Remembered.
Ashcraft gave a program outlining the formation and passage of the Declaration of Independence. President Dorothy Rota arrived and led a short business meeting. It was decided to help with a project to clean up the neglected landscaping in front of the Municipal Building on Bridge Street and to ask Rocky Romano to speak with the group at a future meeting. It was also decided to have a presence at the September Wind Down Wednesday in honor of the Club’s 94th birthday. The Shinnston Garden Club’s original mission was the beautification of the community, but the group has donated to many educational and youth causes during its 94 years in existence.
While the group enjoyed hot dogs and snack cakes, films were shown of Shinnston in the thirties and fifties. A time of reminiscence and fellowship was enjoyed by all. Present not previously mentioned were: David Harbert, Donna Post, Marjorie Jackson, Pam Pumphrey, Juanita Pumphrey, Beth Linn, Virginia Livingston, Paula Harrison, Chad Edwards and Sharon Myers.
