This week’s edition of Tee it Up took us to the mountains for a trip to Canaan Valley. Designed by Geoffrey Cornish, this 18 hole par 72 championship course has long been one of the very best that the State of West Virginia has to offer.. Ranging from 6,984 yards from the tips and with multiple tees offered, there is the perfect amount of challenge available for golfers of all skill levels while guaranteeing a fun round for even the novices in the group.
Canaan Valley offers a straightforward approach. What you see is exactly what you get with no hidden surprises looking to derail your round. However there are plenty of obstacles on this pristine golf property standing between you and that low score that you are chasing. Elevation changes, trails that have been strategically placed, punishing rough, eight water hazards, and 65 sand bunkers provide the teeth for this golf gem.
The dog days of summer have taken their toll on golfers and courses in West Virginia. Playing in the excess humidity and high heat is no fun and it has wrecked havoc on course conditions everywhere – except Canaan Valley.
The weather provided a big break from the scorching heat and the course was in perfect shape. The latter is a result of the efforts of the top notch staff that is under the leadership of Sherri Harold. Harold’s love for Canaan Valley and work ethic have spearheaded the efforts of a friendly and talented staff, propelling this venue from tee to green, making sure that every aspect of this course is in top shape. It has taken a great deal of effort to stay ahead of the drought conditions we have experienced this summer. Those early summer efforts have resulted in a course that is now the cream of the crop.
The best advice that I can give you is to take advantage of a stay and play package. The first thought after your round is going to be how to get back on this course. The lodge offers great food with the beech club and fitness center. There are several additional activities available for others that don’t golf, so you can bring the entire family or a large group.
The closest thing to heaven is a round of golf at Canaan Valley during the fall and that is just around the corner. Make your plans today for an incredible trip tomorrow!
