United Way of Harrison County’s 2015 Campaign Chair James Swiger was in Shinnston on Monday to place a football on the 30 yard line of this year’s campaign ‘scoreboard’. What that scoreboard shows is that the campaign has already raised 30% of its donation goal! Swiger is asking that individuals and businesses throughout Harrison County come together as “one team” to support United Way agencies and help them move the ball up the field to score a touchdown before the campaign ends.
Swiger has given this year’s campaign a sports theme; however, it’s not just about football. They’re also delving into boat racing. Get a team together and participate in the United Way’s inaugural cardboard boat race! Yes, a cardboard boat race … boats made entirely of cardboard – with perhaps a little help from duct tape and polyruethane!
Boats will race across Hinkle and Deegan Lakes in Bridgeport on Sunday, October 12th. Crews must check in between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. and the first race begins at 2:30. Participants must be at least 12 years old.
Design your vessel, construct it, decorate it, spend as much or as little as you want! The race should be a ‘fun’ event to watch – even if you don’t participate.
Awards and trophies will be given in four categories: Junior (ages 12-17), Adult (ages 18 & over), Business, and Non-Profit. First, second, and third place awards will be given in each division for the fastest finishing time. Other special recognition will be given for “Best in Race”, “Team Spirit”, and “People’s Choice”.

Ahoy, Mates! Rustle up a crew of sailors and plan to dip your paddles in the water to support the United Way. It promises to be an afternoon of great fun while at the same time raising awareness of the United Way’s many community partnerships with local health and human service agencies.
