Romney, WV – 8/13/2025 – The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB) proudly announces the relaunch of its Career Academy for Postgraduates (CAP) program, the state’s only comprehensive transition program designed specifically to serve young adults who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing (DHH), Visually Impaired (VI), or Deafblind.

The program’s two-track approach allows students to choose a path best suited to their goals:

  • The Educational Track focuses on academic readiness, college prep, and self-advocacy for those pursuing higher education or technical certification.
  • The Vocational Track emphasizes career-specific skills, job training, and work experience for those aiming to enter the workforce directly.

The program’s core components include self-awareness and determination, employment readiness, social skills development, and self-advocacy training, all designed to foster independence and confidence.

Supplementary services provide essential support tailored to each student’s needs, including American Sign Language (ASL), Braille instruction, technology training, driver’s education, orientation & mobility (O&M), speech-language pathology, and tutoring.

“The Career Academy for Postgraduates (CAP) comprehensive program is a game-changer for Deaf, Hard of Hearing (DHH), and Visually Impaired (VI) students across West Virginia. This program isn’t just about planning for the future; it’s about empowering students to live independently, pursue meaningful careers, and actively contribute to their communities. Relaunching CAP demonstrates WVSDB’s commitment to giving these young adults every opportunity to succeed and thrive after graduation.”

— Rachel Lanham, Transition Coordinator

The program also benefits from strong partnerships with local institutions and agencies, including Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College, Potomac State College of West Virginia University (WVU) and its Office of Student Accommodations (OSA), and the West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS).
