The West Virginia University School of Medicine Rural Family Medicine Residency Program will welcome five West Virginia medical students to the program in July. For the first time in the program’s history, each incoming resident is a current rural scholar from either the West Virginia University School of Medicine or the West Virginia School for Osteopathic Medicine.
The program welcomes incoming residents Garrett Riggleman and Ellen Thomas from the WVU School of Medicine’s Eastern Campus and Elizabeth Coyle, Aiden Ward and Carleigh Ward from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Residency program director Angela Cherry, M.D., said she is excited to welcome this historic class to Harpers Ferry in July.
“This year, we are fortunate enough to welcome an incoming residency class comprised entirely of West Virginia rural scholars for the first time in our program’s history,” Dr. Cherry said. “I look forward to working with each one of them over the next three years as they continue their medical training right here in the Mountain State.”
Residents of the program practice primarily at Harpers Ferry Family Medicine, a clinic that sees more than 30,000 patient visits per year. Residents also do inpatient rotations at Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson, additional training at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg and inpatient pediatrics rotations at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
