Following an investigation, State Police say a crash involving a Shinnston police officer was the officer’s fault.
Multiple media outlets reported that two vehicles were involved in the crash, which resulted in a downed power line, near the intersection of Rt. 19 and Meadowbrook Road in Harrison County on Dec. 1.
In a later interview, Shinnston Police Chief Jon Harbert released more information, including the name of the officer involved: J. Hetherington. Harbert said Hetherington attempted to stop Justin Dwayne Kuhens for a “standard traffic violation.” Kuhens fled “recklessly,” and Hetherington pursued, Harbert said.
Last week, State Police Corporal M.A. Bailey said following a short investigation, he determined Hetherington attempted to pass in a no-passing zone while another vehicle was attempting to make a left turn onto Meadowbrook from Rt. 19. The officer did turn on his siren and flashing lights.
“The cause of the wreck was the officer went left to center, and he t-boned a vehicle as it was making a turn,” Bailey said. “You can pass in a no-passing, but you have to use due care. If you get in a wreck, then everything — the liability falls back on you.”
In a previous interview, Shinnston Police Chief Jon Harbert answered questions about the reason for the pursuit but referred questions about the crash to State Police. He also previously said neither party was seriously injured.
