FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The Fairmont State Athletics Department will be celebrating the 1988 Fairmont State Football WVIAC Championship team at the 2023 homecoming football game on Saturday, Sept. 30. The team captured the 1988 conference title 35 years ago.
Members of the 1988 WVIAC Championship team can RSVP at this link to participate in the tailgate. The tailgate will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on September 30 prior to the homecoming game and will be located at the pavilion next to the tennis courts.
Additionally, Gordon Moon, a player on the 1988 championship team, was selected to the Fairmont State Athletics Hall of Fame earlier this month. Moon will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame on Friday, September 29 beginning with the social hour at 5 p.m. and the dinner at 6 p.m. Tickets for the Hall of Fame dinner can be purchased here.
The Falcons posted a record of 5-0-2 in 1988 and finished the season with a 7-2-2 overall record and qualified for the NAIA Playoffs for the first time since 1981. Fairmont State finished the ’88 season ranked No. 10 in the final NAIA national poll.
