CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS) announces the official appointment of Lorie Bragg as Commissioner of the Bureau for Social Services (BSS). Bragg has served in an interim capacity for the past several months, providing steady leadership during a period of transition and challenge. Her efforts have driven meaningful progress on some of the most pressing issues in the state’s child welfare system, and her leadership is expected to continue guiding the Bureau toward lasting, systemic change.

With more than two decades of experience in child welfare and social services, Lorie has held a variety of roles, from Child Protective Services (CPS) Case Aide to Deputy Commissioner. Throughout her career, she has remained focused on improving outcomes for children and families across West Virginia. She has led several key initiatives, including the creation of the Bureau’s Placement Division and enhancements to the youth assessment process, each rooted in a commitment to ensuring individuals receive the care and support they deserve. Her track record of challenging the status quo and driving meaningful change has only deepened during her time as Interim Commissioner.

Known for her collaborative leadership style and deep understanding of the system’s complexities, Lorie is recognized for bringing people together to build consensus, drive solutions, and achieve shared goals. Her ability to listen deeply, respond thoughtfully, and lead decisively has earned the trust of colleagues, staff, and partners alike, qualities that are essential as the Bureau continues its work to strengthen the state’s child welfare system.
