You Can Choose Your Own Outlook

Jill Fratto’s ‘wellness column’ for Good Health Guide

We are living in a society and a community where there are a lot of issues about which you can choose your outlook and therefore, express your opinion.

I don’t need to make a list, but I do want to point out the trend of negativity that seems to be occurring.

Energy is contagious, so you may feel anxious, nervous, fearful, or angry about what’s going on around you – be it in your workplace, your community, or your country.  I am here to remind you that you do have a choice in how you react to events around you.  The goal of life is to feel at peace, and ultimately, be happy.  Sometimes I see people making choices that are directly in opposition to this goal. So what you can you do to minimize negative energies and drama in your life?

  1. Limit exposure to media. You don’t really need to read every news story and article that comes across your television or phone screen. The stories are written to engage our emotions, and sadly, most not in a positive way.  You can make the choice to turn it off and not let it control how YOU feel.
  2. Don’t take social media so seriously — and don’t engage in public drama. Social media is driven by opinions and each person’s opinion comes from their own individual filter. Arguing on social media doesn’t change the other person’s filter any more than it adds positive energy to yours.  Let it go.
  3. Stop feeding the drama. I talk to people who say they don’t want drama in their life, yet it follows them around every corner. Drama only grows if you feed it.  Believe it or not, it actually does go away if you choose not to participate.  Walk away if the conversation turns ugly and don’t respond when others try to trigger you.  Create a new “No Drama” policy for your life and follow it.  As drama decreases, inner peace increases.

It’s OK to just observe what’s going on around you without labeling, judging or even participating.  Life gives each of us enough daily challenges that we need our energy for – we shouldn’t add more unnecessarily.  Let’s focus more on the important things in life and spread LOVE rather than drama or contempt.
