Heavy rain and water drainage along Rt. 19 had washed out the basement of a residential structure at 585 South Pike Street, leaving it unstable. Demolition of this property, which has been unoccupied for some time, began on Tuesday of this week, continuing the City’s attempt to eliminate BAD buildings in the City of Shinnston. According to Mayor Sam DeMarco, the downtown property (321 Pike Street) that collapsed last week, has been inspected for asbestos; some was detected and will be removed. The site has been posted and removal of debris will begin within ten days from the time of posting. The City has already received approval from the WV Department of Environmental Protection to use the bricks from the downtown structure to fill the hole left after demo of 585 South Pike Street has been completed.
