James “Mike” Michael Monell, 59, of Fairmont (Swisher Hill), sadly passed away peacefully at Ruby Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born April 27, 1965 in Fairmont, the only son, to the late Paul A. Monell and Pauline Darway- Monell.
Mike was a 1983 graduate of North Marion High School. He worked construction most of his life and was owner of Monell Construction until his health declined.
“Monell” was known to all as the life of the party!! He never knew a stranger and would give the shirt off his back, even if it were his last. He loved riding motorcycles and hanging out with his friends. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys and Dale Earnhardt fan!!
He is survived by his mother, Pauline Darway-Monell of Swisher Hill; one son, John Michael “Kramer” Monell of Monongah; one daughter, Jacy Mariah Monell of Fairmont; two sisters: Tina Monell-Linn and husband Bill of Fairmont and Paula Cook-McIntire and husband Chris of Worthington; two nieces and two nephews (he nicknamed each of them): Ducati (Duke) R. Linn, Case (6-pack) W. Linn, Josey (Pruntytown) M. Linn and Hannah (Hannah Banana) G. McIntire; two aunts: Bertie (Darway) Candid of Fairmont and Shirley (Darway) Brown of Worthington and one uncle, Paul Darway of Michigan; his ‘second’ mother, Patty Morris and husband “Train” of Sarasota, FL as well as many cousins. Most recently, he connected with his half-sister, Dawn Drake and her boys from Weirton.
In addition to his father, Mike is preceded in death by his grandparents: Louie and Frances Monell and William and Mamie (Palmer) Darway; aunts and uncles: Charles and Katy Darway, James and Ona Darway, Jack and Nancy Darway, Bob and Rhoda Darway, George and Janet Darway, Betty (Darway) and John Sedera and Joe Candid and another “second” mother, Dorothy Corder.
Mike would want everyone to come as you are, he would not want you to get dressed up for him. The family would like to thank all of Mike’s friends who have helped him and taken him under their wings over the last few years. Thanks to friends at Bittingers and Pruntys for always looking out for him. To the nursing staff at Ruby (SICU Unit), Dr. Palmer, nurses: Alex, Emily and Hanna that stayed by our sides. Your compassionate care was OUTSTANDING!
