John Gilbert Mitchell, Sr., 89, of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at Harmony at White Oaks. He was born December 16, 1934 in Wolf Summit, a son of the late Otto and Minnie Malory Mitchell.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Elaine Dennison Mitchell.

He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Mitchell Dickens of Anmoore; his grandchildren, Deborah Ann Dickens of Reynoldsville; and Christopher Lee Wilmoth of Anmoore; his great-grandchildren, Colton David, Cameran Marrie, and Caleb Michael Wilmoth; and Piper Nicole and Destiny Hope Dickens; and his beloved cat, “Nipsy”.

John was preceded in death by his son, John Mitchell, Jr.; his brother, Otto Mitchell; his sister, Mabel Lee “Aunie Lee” Rizzo and her husband Leonard; as well as his mother and father-in-law, Ray A. and Mary Dennison.

John proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. He went on to work at the Exponent-Telegram for nearly 40 years. He enjoyed day trips with his son, painting cars, bowling and going out to eat. He also loved taking his grandchildren to Hills Department Store where they would people watch while they enjoyed popcorn and slushies. John was a member of the Reynoldsville Baptist Church.

Friends will be received at Perine Funeral Home, 1348 S. Pike St. Shinnston, on Wednesday from 11:00am until the time of the funeral service at 1:00pm. Pastor Jon Hayes will officiate the service. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Quiet Dell. Online memories and condolences can be shared with the family at www.perinefunerals.com
