Heaven gained another angel with the passing of Josephine “Joey” May Jones, 91, on Oct. 31, 2025 at Ruby Memorial Hospital. Joey was born in Wheeling on March 28, 1934, daughter of the late Albert and Beatrice (Barbaric) Popovich. Joey married her husband, Sherwood Jones on July 31, 1955. A lifelong resident of the Hutchinson community, Joey was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Joey is preceded in death by her husband Sherwood Jones, to whom she was married 64 years; her beloved grandson, Erik Jones; and her parents Albert and Beatrice Popovich.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Becky Jones of Fairmont, and her daughter, Vanessa Rodriguez of Bridgeport. Her grandchildren include Kylie (Brandon) Price of Shinnston, Cory (Joni) Jones of Morgantown, and Rayanna Rodriguez of Bridgeport. Great grandchildren include Emilia and Sophia Jones of Monongah, Adeline and Lily Jones of Morgantown, and Emma Price of Shinnston. Joey was blessed with many loyal friends over her lifetime, including Laura Ringer, Missy Thompson and Sandy Collins of the Hutchinson area.

Joey graduated from Monongah High School, and throughout her life she worked as a homemaker, a telephone operator, a voting poll worker, and a 30-year employee of Wishing Well Nursing Home where she worked in the laundry department. Joey retired at age 73 in 2007.

Joey enjoyed celebrating holidays with her family and friends, especially Christmas. She always had new Christmas decorations and beautiful lights on her house for everyone to enjoy. She made her Christmas Eve soup and cabbage rolls, a family tradition. Joey collected angels as well, which coordinated with her love of Christmas. Joey also loved shopping, during any season, and she gave wonderful gifts to family and friends with distinctive cards covered with stickers, showing that extra bit of love.

Neighbors all knew Joey loved sitting outdoors in the sunshine on her deck. On a summer day she would be out there for hours, but Joey seldom missed the soap opera Days of Our Lives, of which she was a loyal fan throughout her life. Joey also was a fan of the Mannington Fair, which she attended annually, including most recently in 2025.

Joey was blessed to be able to drive her car and to live in her Hutchinson home until earlier this year. She loved fiercely her home and the Hutchinson community members, many of whom came out to celebrate her 90th birthday at a party held in her honor in 2024.

Joey enjoyed talking on the phone regularly and following family and friends on Facebook. She also enjoyed attending Gateway United Methodist Church where she was warmly welcomed.

Joey was grateful for everyone who was part of her life, especially daughter-in-law Becky, who helped Joey be able to live comfortably with family until her passing.

Family and friends will be received at Dorsey Funeral Home, 701 S. Pike St., Shinnston, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 from 4:00pm – 8:00pm for visitation and on Thursday, November 6, 2025 from 12:00pm until time of service, 2:00pm with Pastor Sabrina Haught and Pastor Nici Masters officiating. Interment to follow to Enterprise I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Dorsey Funeral Home is honored to be handling the arrangements for the Jones family.
