Mildred Evon “Millie” Gemondo, 90, of Lumberport, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2025, in Bridgeport Healthcare Center following a brief illness. She was born in Riverdale on December 12, 1934, a daughter of the late Frank Joseph and Florence Belle (Raber) Gemondo.
She leaves behind her many nieces and nephews who called her “Aunt Midge”; her special classmates; and friends.
One of seven children, she was preceded in death by her siblings, James (Lelia “Bunt”) Gemondo; Tony (Mattie) Gemondo; Frank “Junior” (Evelyn) Gemondo; Nelson Gemondo; Jessie Beveridge; and Mary (George) Parker. She also was preceded in death by her son, Charles Tano Gemondo, her daughter, Vicki Tano Bentley; and several nieces and nephews.
Millie was a graduate of Shinnston High School, Class of 1953, and was chairperson of the class reunions for many years. She received a Board of Regents Bachelors Degree from Fairmont State University in Speech, English, Education, and Business Management in 1984.
In the 60’s, she managed the Palace and Mayflower Restaurants in Fairmont. Upon leaving West Virginia she worked in Washington DC for the late Senator John G. Tower of Texas as his Correspondent Supervisor. Upon her return to WV to care for her mother, she worked at the Harrison County Tax Office, and then managed the Shinnston Chiropractic Center, leaving in 1989.
An active church member, she was a member of Coon’s Run Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir for over 30 years. Over the years, she had been involved in the North Shinnston Baptist Church; the First Baptist Church of Shinnston, and Charles Street Christian Churches.
As an active community member, she was deeply involved in the Woman’s Club of Shinnston; the Central WV Toastmasters 2885; the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 31 and VFW Post 573; the Shinnston-Lincoln Scholarship Board of Directors, where she was inducted in 2005; and Shinnston Frontier Days.
She was an author and with her friend Trish MacGregore, published “Animal Totems. She also had a love for painting, reading, and singing, but her greatest love was for her family.
An avid animal lover, especially for her cats, the family requests that instead of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Harrison County Humane Society, P.O. Box 4397, Clarksburg, WV 26302.
The family would also like to thank the staff of Bridgeport Healthcare Center for the wonderful care and great friendship provided by the staff and residents.
Friends will be received at Perine Funeral Home, 1348 S. Pike Street, Shinnston, on Friday, June 6, 2025, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., where services will be held at 1 p.m with Pastor Kevin Nuzum.
