Morris James (Jim) Summers, of Worthington, passed away on June 13th, at his residence, surrounded by his wife and daughters. He was born November 11th, 1947, the son of the late Harry P. (Jack) Summers and Vera Bernice Summers.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Deborah and his three daughters Christy Shaver (Ronnie), Rochelle “Rocky” Summers, Melissa Wood (Bill) and his last surviving sibling Jackie Stiles (Duane). Jim also leaves behind nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his son, Morris James (Jimmy) Summers Jr., and his brothers Eddie and Scott Summers.
He was a 1965 graduate of West Fairmont High School. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army and went on to become an elite member of the Army Rangers. He served as a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion 27th Infantry Wolfhounds in Cu Chi Vietnam. Jim was awarded a National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal w/2 Bronze Stars; Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal w/Device 60; Combat Infantryman Badge (1st award) 1 O/S Bar; Expert (M16) Sharpshooter (M14) and a Purple Heart for wounds received in action.
Jim was an avid hunter and angler. He was a 2-time West Virginia Bass Nation State Champion, WVBN Vice-President from 2011-2016, WVBN Conservation Director from 1994-2009, and WV Wildlife Federation Vice President from 1995-2012. Jim also retired as a supervisor from Peabody Energy.
Family and friends will be received at Dorsey Funeral Home, 701 S. Pike St., Shinnston, on Thursday, June 19, 2025 from 11:00am until the time of the funeral service at 5:00pm with Pastor David Huckins officiating. Internment will take place at the West Virginia National Cemetery at a later date.
