The history of quilting began centuries ago, and, originally, it was a necessity! Quilts were needed for survival, providing warmth during cold, frigid weather. Pioneer women stitched together by hand a layer of fabric, topped with padding, and then another layer of fabric, often using scraps of well-worn clothing or even feed sacks! They might not have been works of art, but they were functional.
As time passed, experience was gained, their skills became more polished, and some women may have sold or traded their quilts as a way to help support their families. Their resourcefulness soon became a household craft that was handed down through the generations.
At some point through the years, guilds developed, and these ladies began to share techniques, exchange patterns … and quilting became a creative outlet and a popular hobby. Today, in fact, it is one that has captured the interest of an estimated 21 million quilters!
The Museum’s Quilt Show will offer a peek at this artistry, some having been made in modern times, and others that are antique heirlooms.
Mrs. Herndon noted that since Quilt Shows used to be a part of Frontier Days celebrations that were once held annually here in Shinnston, this brings back a bit of nostalgia that the museum is pleased to offer.
Displays were set up and ready for viewing on Sept. 4, at which time at least two dozen quilts had been gathered for the exhibit. However, Mrs. Herndon noted that a few more are expected, making it the largest display of this artistry she has had thus far.
As was done for last month’s Art Show, visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite and a ‘People’s Choice’ will be selected. Once again, a reception for those who exhibited quilts will be held on the last Saturday in September.
The Museum’s regular hours are every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. If these hours are not convenient and you would like to view the quilts, you may call Mrs. Herndon (304-677-6650) to request an appointment. Stop by before the end of September and cast a vote for your ‘favorite’!
