On Saturday, November 1, 2025, American Legion Post 31 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 31 and the American Legion Family were honored to welcome home American Legion Auxiliary Department of West Virginia President, Kim Mellie.
The tradition of Homecoming for department leaders is the American Legion and its Auxiliary Stem from the organization’s broader mission to recognize and support veterans and their families. These events are designed to welcome back the Department Commander or Department President after their term of service or to celebrate their leadership during the year. Homecomings serve as ceremonial acknowledgement of their dedication, providing an opportunity for members to gather, reflect on achievements, and strengthen the bonds within the department.
Following a social hour, the invocation was given by Department Chaplain, Rebecca Farley followed by the POW/MIA Service presented by David Hall, National Executive Committee Alternate and Past Department Commander. A Polynesian style dinner was served to guests. Following dinner, the gathering heard special remarks by Department President, Kim Mellie, an active Shinnston Unit 31 Auxiliary member. The evening’s keynote speaker was Billie Jo Claypool, Director of Honor Flight. This is one of President Kim’s special projects. The closing prayer was given by Department Chaplain, Rebecca Farley. The event was attended by approximately 80 guests.
