Runway to the World

By Jim Hunt for the News and Journal

This past week, my wife and I flew out of the North Central Regional Airport in

Bridgeport for a quick visit to see our granddaughter cheer at her middle school’s final

football game. With a busy week ahead, we chose to fly instead of making the seven-

hour drive to Lancaster, South Carolina. While my wife has taken this flight several

times, it was my first experience. Although we booked the 6:30 AM flight, a delay until

8:30 AM didn’t bother us too much—we found out the night before, allowing us a bit of

extra sleep.

Flying out of our local airport is a refreshing change compared to larger airports I've

experienced across the country. The parking lot, conveniently located just outside the

terminal, is affordably priced at only $5.00 per day, unlike the $35 or more at many other

airports, where lengthy bus rides to the terminal are common. The TSA security

screening is efficient, with friendly agents ready to help. Once through, the covered

jetway quickly connects you to the plane, keeping you out of the elements. In less than

an hour, we were landing in Charlotte, where our daughter was waiting to whisk us

away. By 10:30 AM, we were enjoying breakfast near her home—if we had driven, we’d

still be passing through Beckley, WV, with five hours of travel ahead.

Exciting changes are on the horizon for our airport, with the new terminal set to open in

  1. This impressive building will be a significant upgrade, resembling many larger,

modern airports across the nation. The current terminal has served us well, but it’s time

for a facility that meets today’s travel demands. Though access roads and the parking

lot are still being finalized, and construction will begin by spring, giving us a stunning

new gateway for decades to come.

This achievement is a testament to the hard work of many, particularly Rick Rock,

director of the Benedum Airport Authority, and the local leaders who partnered with

state and federal officials. Their collaboration has created a $50 million project with only

a modest debt of around $5 million, showcasing how teamwork can overcome the

political hurdles often seen in large projects. The airport’s growth could transform

aviation into a key economic driver for our region, offering young people the chance to

train for aviation jobs and build their futures here while enjoying the local recreational

opportunities.

Our granddaughter’s final home game was a resounding victory, with an electrifying

performance by the cheerleaders and the team. She was thrilled we could be there, and

as our daughter dropped us off at the Charlotte airport, she thanked us for coming

down. We hopped on the plane and returned to Clarksburg after a pleasant flight. Who

could ask for more? As we settled into our seats, I couldn’t help but reflect on how our

local airport not only connects us to the world but also strengthens our ties to family and

community.
