The Shinnston Senior Citizens met on December 7, 2014 at the American Legion with Janet Dotson president. The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem.
The following people were on the prayer list: Alice Gwyn’s sister, Brenda Nestor, Pauline Reed, Mary Gump, Libby Butcher’s husband and Joan Whiteman.
Bill Leasburg from the ‘Starving Artist Studio’ was the guest. He led the seniors in painting a red poinsettia. Everyone enjoyed the two-hour lesson. The pictures were beautiful and will add a Christmas decoration to our homes.
Everyone was on their own in the kitchen. Janet Dotson picked up subs from Subway for all to eat. Covered dishes were also served. Janet made a few cakes for the meal; Libby Butcher and Mary Stutler made homemade cookies and Janet Dotson made homemade brownies and zucchini, pecan, raisin and pineapple breads. Tom Greaver gave the meal blessing.
A ‘make-a-turkey’ contest was held and Stan ley McIntire and Billie Allen won the contest and received a box of Russell Stover candy. Each senior who painted a picture was given a real live poinsettia.
Next week we will be having fish from Long Jon Silver’s and Linda and Ron Robinson will be in charge in the kitchen. Homemade cakes will be made by Brenda Nestor, Linda and Billie Allen.
Beth Fitzgerald from the Clarksburg Senior Center passed out the December newsletter and took memberships for the year Jan. 1, 2015 – Dec. 31, 2015. We want to encourage all people to renew their memberships. Cost is $7. We will be glad to take any new members also. Mail your check to Janet Dotson at Owings Road, Shinnston and she will mail your membership card to you for the year 2015. Remember to be an honorary member without coming, you can still join and we wish you would. Almost half of Shinnston is made up of seniors and we’d like to have you join us.
Seniors are having a white elephant sale each week. Anything a senior wants to sell can go on the special table. Janet furnishes the price stickers. We have had 4 or 5 people selling items and this event is going over very well. If you have something you no longer want or need, bring it in and it will be sold.
Please contact Janet if you want to go to the Christmas luncheon at the Clarksburg Senior Center on Dec. 18th. The van will be at the Nutrition Site at 11 a.m. to take you and your meal will be paid for by our membership satellite. They have a new chef who makes the most wonderful meals!
Stanley McIntire won the 50/50 drawing; Libby Butcher won the first door prize; and Brenda Nestor, Connie Perkins and Joan Whiteman won the guessing jar. Bingo was not played due to the time involved in the painting class.
