Dortha Parsons, of Shinnston, was honored last month for her thousands of hours volunteering with the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center.
On April 29, Department of Veterans Affairs’ Center for Development and Civic Engagement honored Parsons as the 2022 National Female Volunteer of the Year, according to a news release. Parsons was recognized at the annual National Advisory Committee meeting in Denver, Colorado.
Since 1977, Parsons has been an active medical center volunteer and has accumulated over 33,000 volunteer hours. She has volunteered in recreation therapy, information technology, chaplain service, and most recently in diagnostic service providing customer service to veterans. She is active in the American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and the Order of the Rebekahs.
“All volunteers are truly the lifeblood of the medical center,” said Barbara Forsha, medical center director. “We could not provide services to our veterans as efficiently as we do without them. Dortha truly goes above and beyond by not only volunteering, but she also donates items through her respective organizations to support the veterans we serve. We are blessed to have her as part of our team and are honored she was selected as this year’s National Female Volunteer of the Year.”
