River and Bearett Miker from Shinnston West Virginia competed in the WVYWA West Virginia Youth Wrestling tournament this past weekend Feb 28 through March 1.
The tournament consists of a regional tournament where the top 8 wrestlers in typical 32 man brackets including Harrison/Marion/Mon and all counties east through the eastern panhandle compete for region two qualifying spots. Once qualified the wrestlers face the entire state with no separations other than age and weight.
Bearett Miker was the 1 seed in the 8u 60lb bracket and went undefeated without allowing an offensive point and River Miker 12u 95 also went undefeated without allowing a point in the regional bracket making them both region 2 champions.
Both boys faced stiff competition at the state tournament as Bearett lost a match on day one and bounced back to take 3rd place in the state finishing with a record of 7-1 avenging his only loss in his third place match and outscoring his opponents 73-6 with two falls(pins), two technical falls and two major decisions. Bearett finished the season with only two losses in West Virginia.
River Miker finished his bracket with a record of 5-0 including two falls(pins) and a major decision for 1st place making him the 12u 95 West Virginia State Champion. River finished the season with no losses in the state of West Virginia.
This win now makes River a West Virginia Folkstyle and Freestyle state champion. Other notable victories include a Jr Powerade championship last year in Cannonsburg, Pa where he defeated State champions from New York, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania on his way to victory in a very tough tournament.
The Miker brothers train in Shinnston, WV.
