Timmy “Tim” R. Smith, 67, of Clarksburg, passed away on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at the United Hospital Center after a courageous battle. He was born on February 3, 1958, a son of the late Frank and Wilma Long Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife, friend, and companion for over 30 years, Diana M. Hustead Smith, whom he married August 5, 1995. Also surviving are his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Janet Hustead, Lumberport, Jerry and Cheryl Hustead, Lumberport, and Jim and Mary Hustead, of Clarksburg; his many nephews and nieces, Bobby Schetzel and his wife Cheryl, Erik Hustead and his wife Holly, Mike Hustead, Jimmy Hustead, and Melissa Hustead, and many great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Tim was preceded in death by a sister, Nella Thurman, Mt. Vernon, OH, and his nephew, Brian Hustead.
Tim attended W.I. High School in Clarksburg and then enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17 where he served his country for four years. After obtaining an honorable discharge from service he returned to civilian life and attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh to study photography. Before completion of that program, he returned to Clarksburg, WV and began to work for the Town of Anmoore in the Public Works department. Marshall Goff, who was a police officer in Anmoore at the time and was a childhood friend, told Tim about an opportunity for a part-time police officer position with the Stonewood Police Department. That is where Tim’s policing career began. He later was employed as the Chief of Police in Lost Creek until finally becoming a member of the Clarksburg Police Department in the mid 1980s. He attained the rank of Lieutenant before his retirement in 2013.
After retirement from policing, he was employed by Urse Honda as a salesman and later by Bob Trickett Cadillac Buick GMC as a service writer. His final move of employment was to the Harrison County Courthouse Security Division.
Tim was always known for his quick-witted humor and his classic line when leaving, “I’m glad you got to see me.” He has shown tremendous courage, strength, and faith through his health battles in recent months. He was determined to share his faith with others and encourage them in their own battles, even as he was fighting his own. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
The family will receive friends at the Perine Funeral Home, 1348 S. Pike St., Shinnston, from 2-8pm, Sunday where funeral services will be held at 11am, Monday, December 8th, with Pastor Robert Shingleton officiating. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Mt. Clare where full military graveside rites will be accorded. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.perinefunerals.com.
