The Lincoln High School Tourism Class has been busy exploring several

community resources this Spring, learning how even a small town can use

resources to spur tourism and community development.

This past week the group examined historical displays and artifacts at the

Bice-Ferguson Memorial Museum. Director Debra Herndon explained that

people from at least 9 other states visited the Museum last season, some

from as far away as Wyoming, Nevada and Washington State. The group

also went upstairs to the alumni room which has been a valuable resource

for people contacting the Museum seeking pictures of ancestors.

Earlier in the Spring, the Tourism Class learned about the Community

Garden and got an opportunity to work in it. They also visited the Gillum

House Bed and Breakfast and learned from Proprietor Kathleen Panek how

to promote a successful B&B in this area.

On April 23 rd the Tourism Class worked with the Levi Shinn Log House and

held a special day for 130 fifth grade students at Big Elm and Lumberport

Elementary. Eighteenth Century activities were set up on the grounds and

members of the Tourism Class acted as tour guides, taking groups of fifth

graders through the house, explaining its historical significance.
