Mary Josephen Tate, 93, of Spelter, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at her residence with her loving children by her side.  Mary was born December 25, 1930 to the late Lester and Olga (Marks) Ashton in Martins Ferry, OH, where she resided until she met and married Frank Tate, Jr. on November 26, 1945.  She was the last surviving member of her family.

Together, they moved to Meadowbrook, WV, where they raised their four children until his death, November 20, 1968.

Mary is survived by her four children:  Frank Tate and wife Tammie of Spelter, Nancy Tate and Rod of Meadowbrook, Shirley Elbon and husband Phil of Erie and Bonnie Tate of Hepzibah; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; one great great step granddaughter and one great great step grandson on their way and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary is preceded in death by one daughter; one grandson; one great granddaughter; one brother; four sisters and a loving, devoted companion, Frank Mazzei as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mary had a sense of humor like no other who knew her.  She will be greatly missed by everyone she touched.

Mary was known for her canned peppers, her ramp dinners, salad dressing and other family recipes.

She enjoyed cooking, reading, spending time with her family and absolutely loved playing the machines.  She was so loving and giving to others before herself.  She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be missed beyond words.

Mary was a Catholic by faith.

Mary was proud of her five-generation legacy … Nancy Tate, Debra Tucker, Megan Tucker and Mason Fisher.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to:

   Humane Society of Harrison County

   2450 Saltwell Road

   Shinnston, WV  26431

A Memorial Service will be held at Dorsey Funeral Home, 701 S. Pike St., Shinnston, on Saturday, August 10, 2024 from 12:00pm until time of service, 2:00pm with Pastor Jim Glaspell officiating.  Inurnment at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.

Dorsey Funeral Home is honored to be handling the arrangements for the Tate family.
