The Shinnston Woman’s Club was honored for 100 years of service to the community at the Dec. 12 City Council meeting.

Woman’s Club Co-President Debra Herndon accepts a proclamation declaring December 2022 as Shinnston Woman’s Club Month from Mayor Rodney Strait.

Council issued a proclamation declaring December 2022 as Shinnston Woman’s Club Month.

According to the proclamation, the group was organized and admitted to the State Federation in April of 2022 and has been in continual operation since then.

It also has empowered members through educational programs and encouraged youth through sponsorships, scholarships and contests.

“The Shinnston Woman’s Club members have been shining examples of involved citizens,” the proclamation states.

In addition, Giana Loretta, a Lincoln High School graduate who is from Shinnston, was honored for being a West Virginia University 2022 Mountaineer of Distinction.

She is a political science, philosophy and communication studies major who has maintained a 4.0 grade point average.

She serves as a Presidential Student Ambassador, an intern with the College of Law West Virginia Innocence Project and student ambassador for Admissions. Loretta is a 2022 Newman Civic Fellow, 2019 Neil S. Bucklew Scholar and two-year Eberly College Scholar.

She said she’ll be spending her final semester studying abroad in France.
